On Apple Festival Saturday, Tehachapi's Best Windows Open Before 10 and After 4

On Apple Festival Saturday, Tehachapi's Best Windows Open Before 10 and After 4

  • October 8, 2026

What time does the Tehachapi Apple Festival start on October 10? Most people would say 10 a.m., when the Main Stage opens on South Green Street. That's the official start. But by then, runners at Philip Marx Central Park will be close to finishing a 5K, and people who joined the Friends of the Library will have spent half an hour picking through the book sale before the public gets in.

Saturday, October 10, 2026, runs as several separate events. Each one has its own organizer and its own hours, and they share the day without sharing a schedule. Where the schedules overlap, some useful windows open up, especially at the start and end of the day.

The festival itself, for reference

Here is the event everyone will be talking about. The Tehachapi Apple Festival runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on South Green Street downtown. This year's theme is Vintage Americana, a nod to America's 250th birthday. The Main Stage schedule, as The Loop Newspaper published it on September 26:

Time Main Stage and street
10:00 a.m. Opening ceremony and the "Apple of Our Community" Volunteer Award
10:15 a.m. Mr. & Miss Apple Festival competition
11:30 a.m. Dance Philosophy
12:15 p.m. Heart & Soul Line Dance, with an open lesson
1:00 p.m. Pie Eating Contest
2:30 p.m. Apple Bobbing
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Apple Drop on Green Street

The line dance lesson needs no registration or experience. Lunch is in Food Truck Alley behind the theater. Also on the list are a festival merchandise giveaway, an old-fashioned cakewalk, and the announcement of the Best-Decorated Vendor Booth.

One gap matters for planning. As of September 30, no 2026 notice on street closures, parking, or shuttles had been published in the sources we checked. The festival's own website still shows copy from 2023. If you plan to drive downtown midday, check with the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce in the final week before the festival, not last year's habits.

Before 10 a.m.: two events that start without the festival

The Apple Dash 5K at Philip Marx Central Park

The Apple Dash starts at 8 a.m. at Philip Marx Central Park, not on Green Street. The start and finish are both near the Scout Hut at the southwest corner of the park, off East E Street.

Signing up on race day is cheaper than signing up online. The RunSignup listing shows $43.40 online, which includes a $3.40 fee, with online registration closing at 7:55 a.m. on race day. Race-day sign-up opens at 7 a.m. and costs $40, payable by card, Venmo, or Zelle. If you live close enough to show up at 7, you save the fee and skip nothing.

The listing doesn't publish a route map or name a race host beyond the start and finish. Anyone who wants to know the turns should plan to ask at check-in.

The book sale's half-hour head start

The Friends of the Tehachapi Library fill the courtyard at the Tehachapi Library, 212 S. Green St., with donated books from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. That puts the sale on the festival street itself. Friends of the Library members and sale volunteers get in early, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Membership at the door is $10.

There's an earlier window too. The Friends' announcement mentions a preview sale on Friday, October 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. If you'd rather browse the shelves before the street fills up, that Friday evening is the best time for it.

All sales support Tehachapi Library programs.

Midday: the second center of gravity on Dennison Road

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the TMRA Touch-A-Truck runs at the Tehachapi Rodeo Grounds, 415 N. Dennison Rd. The calendar lists trucks, emergency vehicles, cranes, and construction equipment, plus a pumpkin patch, vendors, and food trucks. All proceeds go to the TMRA Jr. Rodeo. TMRA stands for the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association.

Touch-A-Truck matters for planning because its hours fall inside the festival's busiest stretch, and its food trucks and pumpkin patch are a separate option from Food Truck Alley. Families who catch the 10:15 Mr. & Miss Apple Festival competition and then head to Dennison Road can be back on Green Street by the 2:30 Apple Bobbing. No 2026 admission price or quiet hour had been published as of this writing.

Downtown has a smaller midday stop as well. Gallery 'N' Gifts, at 100 W. Tehachapi Blvd., is showing entries in the Tehachapi Valley Arts Association's Witch's Hat Decorating Contest from October 2 through 30. The community picks the top three, either in person at the gallery or on its Facebook page until 4 p.m. on October 30. The gallery is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On festival day, voting takes about five minutes on a route you may already be walking.

A quieter noon in Keene

The César E. Chávez National Monument in Keene has "Paper Crafts with Maria Mercado" on its October 10 calendar at noon. Posted hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The monument's calendar page shows a footer date older than these listings, so call the monument before you go. For anyone with houseguests who've already seen the festival, it's a calm option for the middle of the day.

After 4 p.m.: the closing hour that two events share

From 4 to 5 p.m., two things happen at once on the same street. On Green Street, the Apple Drop raises money for local service efforts through the Rotary and Lions clubs. At the library courtyard, the price of a bag of books falls from $5 to $2 for the last hour of the sale.

Touch-A-Truck wraps up at 4, so families from Dennison Road arrive downtown just as the Apple Drop starts. The festival runs until 6. On a day planned from the edges in, the last two hours are the payoff.

Here is that plan in order:

  1. 7:00 a.m. Race-day sign-up at Philip Marx Central Park, $40.
  2. 8:00 a.m. Apple Dash 5K starts near the Scout Hut.
  3. 9:30 a.m. Early book sale access for Friends of the Library members.
  4. 10:00 a.m. Main Stage opens; the book sale opens to everyone.
  5. 11:00 a.m. Touch-A-Truck opens at the Rodeo Grounds. Noon programs start at the Chávez monument.
  6. 1:00 and 2:30 p.m. Pie Eating Contest, then Apple Bobbing.
  7. 4:00 p.m. Apple Drop starts, $2 bags at the library, Touch-A-Truck closes.
  8. 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Book sale ends, then the festival's final hour.

The same overlap shows up on the next few weekends

The way October 10 is built, with several organizers putting events on one date, repeats through the rest of the fall in The Loop's autumn calendar.

On Saturday, October 24, the Chávez monument lists "Picture Frames and Vases with Maria Romero" at noon. That weekend, October 24 and 25, the Dorner Family Vineyard Harvest Festival runs noon to 6 p.m. at 18274 Old Ranch Rd., with free admission. It's held together with tasting rooms in the Tehachapi Mountains AVA. That same Saturday, Ghoulden Hills Trick or Treat runs 4 to 7 p.m. at Meadowbrook Park, with a free pumpkin patch, DJ, and petting zoo. It follows the same pattern as Apple Festival Saturday: a vineyard event in the afternoon and a neighborhood event that starts at 4.

Halloween week fills up the same way. Wood Family Funeral Service at 321 W. F St. hosts its first Trunk and Treat Yo Self on October 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. AltaOne Federal Credit Union at 665 Tucker Rd. hosts a Trunk or Treat on October 30, also 6 to 8. Then the 7th annual Downtown Tehachapi Treat Trail, hosted by Go2Girlz, runs business to business downtown on Saturday, October 31, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

On Sunday, November 1, the Chávez monument lists a Guided Painting and Community Canvas Project with Alex Gallardo at noon. At 4 p.m. the same day, the Tehachapi Symphony performs at Country Oaks Baptist Church, 20915 Schout Rd., with clarinetist Berkeley Price, in a program honoring composers from the United States and Latin America.

November slows down a little. The Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District holds a free Veterans Day ceremony on November 11 at 11:11 a.m. at Philip Marx Central Park, with military-related booths and laser tag from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. On November 21, the district's Hot Chocolate Turkey Trot 5K loops Brite Lake, 22902 Banducci Rd., on dirt and gravel roads. The course is stroller-friendly. Race-day registration starts at 8 a.m., and the race starts at 9:25. Registration closes November 20, at $37 for adults and $25.75 for kids ages 3 to 10. The Turkey Trot lists a November 20 registration close and also offers race-day sign-up, so call the TVRPD offices to confirm which applies before you count on signing up the morning of.

If family is coming up for the Apple Festival and the talk at dinner turns to what Tehachapi is like the other fifty-one Saturdays of the year, Theresa Mann & Co is glad to talk it through over coffee, whether that's a house in town or acreage out toward Keene. Book a Consultation when the time feels right, and enjoy the pie contest.
